AndBarney meets his untimely end because of the same person who killed Andie Bell.
Becca obviously wants Pip to drop her investigation, so she takes Barney and blackmails Pip using her leverage.
However, the series never shows this and in Holly Jackson’s book, things are more complicated.

Barney falls in a river in the novel, after Becca lets him go.

However, in both versions of the story, Barney dies due to Becca’s actions.

Sal Singh, Andie’s boyfriend, confessed before his own death, but Pip doesn’t believe he’s guilty. Teaming up with Sal’s brother Ravi, she dives into a web of secrets to find the real killer.
Becca’s actions almost have the desired effect, too.
Pip briefly considers dropping the investigation at Ravi’s request.
As for how Becca got her hands on Barney, that’s anyone’s guess.
It seems Becca uses this distraction to make her move.
