Having high school characters creates a sense of balance, showing a more innocent and aspirational area of the region.
In a way,these are the dreamers that Tommy spoke of earlier in the season, and they essentially have no idea how dangerous the world is around them, practically in their own backyards, with cartel threats and oil rig explosions.
